How to choose your haircut – the 3 considerations

The secret to great haircuts is three-fold: first, your stylist will consider your face shape and secondly, they will advise on a cut that works with your hair’s texture and lastly (and very importantly), you must understand your lifestyle and its impact on hair maintenance. All good stylists should ask you about your lifestyle activities during the hair consultation…if they don’t, it’s a sure sign you are in the wrong salon.

Just as there are flattering styles for all face shapes, there are also unflattering styles. On our webpage (under the precision cutting header) we detail these considerations in depth.

This blog aims to give you the lifestyle issues that we suggest you consider.

Time:

It’s just not practical for the average working mom to wear a style that demands a lot of time every day to maintain. A good rule of thumb is that it will take you twice as long to finish your own hair as it took the stylist in the salon. They are far more experienced!

Activity:

If you are an active fitness person who goes to gym every day, long hair or styles that require intensive blow waving can be happiness destroyers.

Your job requirements:

Are you a top professional, a member in the management team in a company that has a distinctive culture? Your hair, your make up and your clothes speak for you and your fit into that organisation. If you are in a manufacturing environment consider the implications of your chosen hairstyle on health and safety.

Home care:

All good salons will teach their clients how to manage their hair at home. The great salons will also teach you variations that you can use with the style… ie how to do a quick bun, up style etc.

The truth about traditional hair products and the benefits of organic ones.

What’s the fuss with organic/natural shampoos etc. It’s very fashionable in 2017 to brandish the words ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ beauty products. Chances are, you’ve heard of these terms at one point or another, as the topic of natural and eco-friendly products is becoming an increasingly growing trend.

Are organic hair products really what they are hyped up to be and are there truly any benefits of using them? Well, our answer is – yes, of course. There are so many pro’s of using natural and organic hair products. If you want healthy and beautiful hair, that is.

Did you know this about your traditional shampoo?

The truth is, many big brand traditional shampoos and conditioners contain synthetic chemicals that are potentially harmful to our skin and overall health. That foamy, heaven-smelling goodness that lathers up in your hair may actually contain many harmful ingredients such as sulfate, alcohol, silicone, parabens, and even traces of anti-freeze. At the end of this article, you will find a list of ingredients we strongly advise you to avoid when buying your shampoo and conditioner.

Very Important: Don’t just trust a product just because it says “Organic”or “Natural”, as they are not all created equal, and sometimes are marketing ploys to get you to buy. Make sure to read the ingredients at the back to know what you are really getting. This pure ingredient list and these companies strong position against animal testing combined with product efficacy is precisely why we are an oolaboo and Davines salon.

How is Natural Shampoo Different, and How Does it Work?

Organic shampoos simply don’t have the chemicals present in many traditional shampoos. They contain natural ingredients like proteins, essential oils, vitamins, fruit extracts and so much other goodness. These ingredients in themselves are amazing nutrients for your hair. Natural shampoos also don’t have the SLS ingredient, which means that they don’t lather up as well. Don’t worry – this doesn’t mean that they don’t clean your hair just as well. Simply give an extra rinse, and your hair will be just as clean and shiny as ever.

Why we advocate natural shampoo:

1.Unlike traditional shampoos, they won’t irritate and dry out your scalp, because they are soft and gentle.

2.On the same note, a lack of chemicals means that your hair won’t be damaged or dried out.

3.Do you have coloured hair? Natural shampoo is safe to use for you because it doesn’t strip colour, and can actually make it look more radiant.

4.All the nutrients, vitamins and oils in natural shampoos will provide the nourishment your hair needs, making it healthy and beautiful.

5.They are absolutely safe to use, so you don’t need to be worried about ingesting harmful chemicals into your body and skin.

What to Avoid When Buying Your Hair Products:

  • Sodium laureth sulfate
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
  • Ammonium lauryl sulfate
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Triethanolamine (TEA)
  • Parabens
  • Polyethelyne glycol
  • Alcohol (if listed as one of the first four ingredients)
  • Synthetic Fragrance/Parfum
  • Propylene Glycol (aka anti-freeze)
  • Dimethicone
  • Formaldehyde
  • Petrolatum
  • Siloxanes (ending in -siloxane or -methicone)

What makes Retreat Hairdressing more than a business…

In two words, we care. We are not just a full service salon with the best stylists on the Central Coast, we are a family that care about each other. Our staff, our customers and suppliers are all considered part of the Retreat family.

For our customers, it means we truly care about you and the outcome of your visit. We don’t do what most salons do i.e. just try and get you into high maintenance styles to drive our bottom line and get you out of the chair asap. Our business philosophy and bottom line is driven by you, our happy clients, who enthusiastically refer your friends and family to us. We truly care about you and your needs. The Retreat Experience is what we want you to be an advocate of…this experience is not limited to the service experience, the quality of the precision cutting or colour applications…it’s about the condition of your hair and your ability to keep it looking great for as long as possible.

Every stylist at Retreat Hairdressing gives each client home maintenance guidance, so as to make you looking your best between visits as easy as possible. I have a belief that the quality of our stylist’s work is not only determined at the moment a client leaves the Salon…it’s what the hair looks like when they return. Did we develop a style that the customer could manage effectively, did we provide appropriate product advice to ensure that the condition of hair is optimal etc.

Happy hair days.
